Enclomiphene

Enclomiphene

Also known as: enclomiphene citrate

In plain language

Enclomiphene is one of the two isomers that make up the fertility drug clomiphene. It has been studied in men to raise testosterone while preserving sperm production. It reached late-stage human trials but is not currently approved by the FDA as a standalone product.

What it is explored for

Enclomiphene stands out because it has actually reached controlled human trials, where it raised testosterone in men while largely preserving sperm production. The honest nuance is that it did not gain FDA approval as a standalone product, so it sits between real human data and an approved medicine. Here is where the human research interest is focused.

  • Healthy testosterone support
  • Fertility-preserving hormone research
  • Secondary hypogonadism research
  • LH and FSH stimulation
  • Men's hormonal health interest

These are areas of active interest and reported use, not proven outcomes. This peptide carries a moderate evidence rating, see the evidence summary below for how strong the science actually is.

How it works

Enclomiphene is the trans-isomer of clomiphene and acts as a selective estrogen receptor modulator. It works at the level of the brain's hormone control center.

  • Estrogen receptor blockade. Blocks estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary, reducing estrogen's negative feedback.
  • Increased LH and FSH. The reduced feedback raises LH and FSH, which stimulate the testes to make more testosterone.
  • Preserved fertility. Unlike taking testosterone directly, this approach can raise testosterone while maintaining sperm production.

This mechanism is supported by human clinical-trial data in men with low testosterone.

Evidence summary

Enclomiphene has been tested in controlled human trials in men with secondary hypogonadism, where it raised testosterone while largely preserving sperm counts. However, it did not gain FDA approval as a standalone product, so it sits in a middle ground: real human data, but not an approved medicine.

Reported safety & side effects

In trials, enclomiphene was generally well-tolerated, with side effects broadly similar to clomiphene. As a hormone-modulating drug it can cause mood and visual side effects in some users, and long-term safety data is limited.

Frequently asked

Is enclomiphene FDA-approved?

Not as a standalone product. It reached late-stage human trials and is the active-type isomer of the approved drug clomiphene, but it has not gained FDA approval on its own.

How is it different from taking testosterone?

Enclomiphene stimulates the body to make its own testosterone by increasing LH and FSH, which can preserve sperm production. Taking testosterone directly often suppresses sperm production.
